Each month, the children's department hosts book club discussion groups for children in 1st-8th grade. Book club participants meet once a month to discuss a new book in a small group setting facilitated by a library staff member. Book Club books are available for checkout from the Children's Department of the Main Library about one month prior to the meeting date.
All participants are expected to have finished the assigned title before the meeting and be ready to participate in the discussion. Book Club is a peer-driven club, not a reading-level club. If your child reads at a higher level than their classmates, they should still join the club that reflects their age/grade. Just because a book may be easy to read doesn’t mean the topics aren’t complex and worth discussing.
Because Book Club is so popular, participants are selected by lottery. The lottery opens in mid-August. Watch for announcements via the library’s Facebook page, our Events Calendar, and in the library itself. Once the club fills up, we’ll start a waiting list in case vacancies occur. We realize that schedules change, so it’s important to let staff know if your child needs to drop out of the club. The Children’s Department can be reached at 510-747-7705.
