Raise Your Voice! Story Slam - CANCELLED

Story Slam Cancelled (1).jpg

The Story Slam has been cancelled.

This event will focus on the spoken word. Specifically, it is a story slam, a live storytelling event during which participants can share a true story.

Theme: Participants will have the opportunity to tell or read aloud a personal story (maximum of five minutes) based on the theme: “It seemed like a good idea at the time…” We’ve all had ideas that had unanticipated consequences; we’ve all made plans that have gone awry. Here’s your chance to tell your story of the perfect idea, of the perfect event, that didn’t end up as planned.

Things to Know: Your story must be five minutes or less. This is an all-ages event, so content should be appropriate for a general audience. No profanity or offensive language. This event is noncompetitive.

Story Slam Applications are due by 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26, 2019. Applications can be dropped off at any of the three libraries in Alameda.

How to Prepare: Write It, Read It, Time It, Read It Again

  • How to Prepare: Write It, Read It, Time It, Read It Again
  • Write your story. Craft a strong first line. Share the conflict/challenge and how you handled it. Tell how this experience affected you. Make it personal. Wrap up with a strong ending. Remember that your story should be tailored for the ears and not the eyes.
  • Read it aloud, clearly and concisely. Edit your story, mark places where you want to pause, underline words that you want to emphasize.
  • Time yourself as you are reading. Edit what you have written for length, if your story runs more than 5 minutes.
  • Read it again, and again. Know your story well. The more you practice, the more comfortable you will be.

How to Tell/Read Your Story

  • Be conversational when you read. Treat the audience as your friends.
  • Hook the audience with your first line. Make the audience care.
  • Don’t rush through your story. Speak slowly and pause - you’ll want the audience to hear every word.
  • Smile and breathe.

Thanks for participating and have fun!
