Reopening Phases

We are pleased to announce that the Alameda Free Library will be extending onsite access at the Main Library and moving to Phase 4 on Monday, July 12th for expanded in-person services. We will continue to offer Computer Services at the Main Library. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate the challenges of COVID-19.

During this new phase, we are excited to remove browsing time limits and maximum capacity inside the library.

We remain committed to keeping our staff and guests safe as we move towards the next phase.

Current Library Offerings at Phase 4:

  • Phase 4.0 (Beginning July 12th) Untimed browsing, access to additional computers and indoor seating, extended hours on Thursdays and new open hours on Saturdays.
  • Computer Lab Help via zoom 15-minute one-on-one tech support assistance.
  • Remote Printing Services Pick up at the Main Library.
  • Virtual Programs offer fun virtual activities for all ages to learn together and stay connected during this time of physical distancing.
  • “Ask A Librarian” connects members with librarians for reference questions, research help, assistance with online resources, and more.
  • “Your Next Read” provides members with personalized reading recommendations.
  • Online Resources, including eBooks, streaming movies, and more can be accessed with your library card.
  • eCards Gives California residents instant access to all online resources.
  • Limited Library Delivery during COVID-19
  • Lawyers in the Library (by phone)


Phase 1 : Library Takeout

As of June 2020, the Library will offer Library Takeout of all Library materials at the Main Library. Book drops at all library locations are open, and hold requests can be placed online or by phone (510)747-7740. Library materials will be quarantined after they have been returned. Users are asked to comply with safety guidelines which include physical distancing and wearing face coverings at all times.

Phase 2: Computer Access

The Main Library location will be open for limited computer and printing access for a maximum of 25 minutes. All users will be required to wear face coverings at all times.

• 25-minute Computer Access for printing, scanning, and research use
15-minute one-on-one tech support via Zoom

Phase 3: Limited Onsite Access

On May 3rd, the Main Library will be open for limited onsite access to computer and printing services. Users will be allowed to browse the library collection for a limited time inside the building. Users will be required to wear face coverings at all time. Please see our updated COVID procedures when visiting the library. Six library computer workstations (with a 1 hour limit) are available for drop-in use on a first-come first-served basis.

Newly Added Services:
• Timed Access for browsing materials inside the library
• Self-checkout stations are open

Phase 4: Extended Onsite Access (Beginning July 12th)

On July 12th, the Main Library will extend onsite access. There will no longer be a limit on time spent inside the library. During Phase 4, users will be able to browse, sit and use public tables, check out items, access a printer, scanner, and computer for up to 2 hours maximum per day. Users will be required to wear face coverings at all times. Please see our updated COVID procedures when visiting the library. Additional library computer workstations (with a 2 hour limit) are available for drop-in use on a first-come first-served basis.

  • Library is now open on Saturdays (10am-3pm) and Thursday mornings (10am-5pm)

Phase 5: Full Access beginning September 7th
