In a partnership with the Alameda Unified School District (AUSD), the Alameda Free Library will be offering Student Connect Codes to AUSD students in grades TK-12. Through this partnership, students will have the opportunity to utilize resources available at the Alameda Free Library. 

Students’ AUSD Google ID will act as their Student Connect Code, while their password/PIN will be set to their birth month and day (MMDD).

Which schools are participating in the Student Connect Code program?   

All AUSD TK-12 schools are participating in this program. These include:

  • Alameda Science and Technology Institute
  • Amelia Earhart School 
  • Bay Farm School 
  • Edison School 
  • Encinal Jr. Sr. High School 
  • Franklin Elementary School 
  • Frank Otis Elementary 
  • Island High School 
  • Lincoln Middle School 
  • Love Elementary School 
  • Maya Lin School 
  • Paden Elementary School 
  • Ruby Bridges Elementary School 
  • Wood Middle School 

Who is eligible to participate in this program? 

All TK-12 students enrolled in AUSD qualify for a Student Connect Code. 

Does the code cost anything? 

There is no cost for the Student Connect Code.   

How is the code issued? 

The code is issued in partnership with AUSD. No activation is needed. It is an opt-out program. 

What student information is shared with the Alameda Free Library? 

AUSD shares student’s name, birth date, Google ID, and school with Alameda Free Library. 

What if a student changes schools, transfers out of the district, or graduates?   

Student data is updated quarterly. As long as a student is enrolled in AUSD, their card will remain active. If a student transfers out of the district or graduates, their Student Connect Code will be deactivated at the start of the new school year.

How long is the Student Connect Code valid for? 

It is valid as long as the student is enrolled in AUSD. Students can use their Student Connect Code year-round, even during school breaks! 

What can students use their Student Connect Code for?  

Students may borrow up to 5 physical items at a time, access online resources, and use the public computers at the library. Students may not borrow Link+ items, Wi-Fi Hotspots, items in the Library of Things, or Discover & Go (online resource). 

Where can students use their Student Connect Code? 

It can be used at all Alameda Free Library locations: Main Library (1550 Oak St.), Bay Farm Island Library (3221 Mecartney Rd), and West End Library (788 Santa Clara Ave). 

Can students have a Student Connect Code and a standard Alameda Free Library card?  

Yes. Students can have a standard library card and a Student Connect Code at the same time, and each account will stay separate. They can choose to use their library card or Student Connect Code when accessing library resources. 

How do students check out materials? 

When checking out materials at the library, students should provide their Google ID or name and DOB to a library staff member at the service desk.

What happens if a student loses or damages a library item? Will they have to pay for the item?  

During this pilot program, all fees will be waived. However, if a student loses or damages more than 5 items during the school year, their borrowing privileges may be suspended until the following school year.   

How can students use the Student Connect Code to access digital resources, like Libby? 

When prompted, students should enter their Google ID in the digital resources’ “library card number” field. For the “password” field, students should enter their birth month and day in MMDD format; (for example, July 4 would be 0704). If students need help accessing digital resources, please reach out to the library. 

Can younger siblings or family members use the student's connect code? 

No, Student Connect Codes are for student use only. However, we encourage everyone to sign up for their own Alameda Free Library card. Library cards are free for all California residents. For more information about getting a card, contact the library. 

What if I don’t want my student to participate in this program? 

Contact your school’s office to opt out of this program.
