Ten California Native Plants That Will Thrive in an Urban Garden

What if you left your nest and set out to find a new home, but you were unable to find the food, shelter, nest sites or roosts that you needed? This is the plight so many of our native species, including birds, bats, insects, reptiles, amphibians and mammals face. Decades ago, the pioneers began preaching the benefits of native plants. Now it is time for the rest of us to come on board and start converting our yards so that they provide friendly habitats for wildlife. Come and learn about ten California natives that are easy to grow and do well in small, urban gardens. Most of these plants are low maintenance and drought tolerant, when established and will create beautiful ecosystems for both people and wildlife. In addition to learning about the plants, we will discuss some basics for growing native plants and see samples of some of the plants on our list.

Birgitt Evans has gardened on a large scale for the past 40 years and created a successful garden and nursery business. She is passionate about both growing food and about growing California native plants and about integrating the two. She seeks to encourage and educate others so they can also share the benefits of gardening. She grows both native plants and food crops in three different Alameda County gardens and starts 80% of her plants from seed. She has been an Alameda County Master Gardener since 1999 and served on the board of Alameda Backyard Growers for 10 years.
