Laptops are now available for checkout at the library! 

Installed Software

The Alameda Free Library now has a limited amount of laptops available for checkout at each location. Software that is on the computer:

  • Operating System: Windows 11
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Browser: Chrome, Microsoft Edge
  • Downloading additional software is prohibited.

Borrowing Requirements

  • Patron must provide a valid CA photo ID.
  • Patron also must provide an Alameda Free Library card in good standing. No fees or blocks on the account.
  • Laptops are available for loan to 9th grade and above.
  • Complete a Laptop Lending Agreement. This agreement needs to be filled out every time you borrow a laptop.

Circulation Guidelines

  • A Laptop can be borrowed for 3 days and has no renewals.
  • Patrons are able to borrow it again upon return if there are no holds.
  • Patrons will be responsible for all the contents of the laptop.

Patron Privacy

  • Data and activity are erased for patron privacy each time the laptop is powered down.
  • Patrons are responsible for saving their data to a cloud-based service or to an external drive.

Terms and Conditions

  1. I will visually inspect the laptop and will immediately notify staff of any damage observed.
  2. I will store the laptop in a secure location when not in use.
  3. I understand I am not able to save files to the laptop hard drive.
  4. I will not duplicate, remove, or install any software from/on the laptop.
  5. I understand that there is a $300 fee for a lost or damaged Laptop, a $50 fee for the charging cable and $30 fee for bag.
  6. I will return the laptop directly to a staff member at the circulation desk at least 15 minutes before closing, on or before, the due date.
  7. I will not put the laptop kit in a book drop or automated return system.
  8. I understand that Library staff will inspect the devices to ensure they are in the same condition as when I borrowed them prior to checking in.
  9. All Alameda Free Library policies, including the Behavior Policy, apply to this agreement.
  10. Violation of this agreement may include the suspension of my library privileges for borrowing a laptop in the future.
